Hi! I’m Megan Marshall. I’m a wife, a mom, a Hypnobabies Instructor and a Doula in Las Vegas.
How I Got Involved With Hypnobabies
I’ve always loved babies…who can resist their squishy baby fat rolls, big toothless grins and innocent eyes?! I listened to my friends’ birth stories and watched TV shows about pregnancy and childbirth…and I knew there had to be something better out there than what I heard and saw.
So, when I got pregnant with my oldest son, I started looking at different options. I had heard a little bit about hypnosis for birth, and I was curious. Could I really have a comfortable, enjoyable birth experience? I had a friend who had tried a method of hypnosis for birth, and she told me that she didn’t really feel like she was a part of her birth because of the techniques she used. And I really wanted to be there and experience it all…comfortably, of course!
Then I came across some information about Hypnobabies. When I read that Hypnobabies teaches “eyes-open” childbirth hypnosis so that moms can walk, talk, and be active during their baby’s birth, I knew I had found just what I needed to have the pregnancy and birth experience I wanted!
I haven’t been disappointed! I’ve used Hypnobabies with my own pregnancies and births…and I loved it so much, I knew I had to teach it. All of my births were very different, but wonderful experiences…thanks to Hypnobabies. (You can read the birth stories of my second and third babies if you’re interested. Someday I will get around to writing baby #1′s birth story–you know, in my spare time!)
Now I’m A Hypnobabies Instructor!
When I found out that I could train to become a Hypnobabies instructor, I knew I had found my “thing.” I wanted to share the knowledge and tools that helped me have such peaceful, enjoyable and empowering birth experiences so that other women could enjoy giving birth, too. After all, we women have to look out for each other, right?! (You can read more about how I became a Hypnobabies Instructor here.)
The preparation to be a Hypnobabies Instructor was intense. After being accepted as a trainee, I had to take a hypnosis course, a birth course, and do LOTS and LOTS of reading and studying just to prepare. And then there was the training itself, followed by a certification exam. But the hard work was definitely worth it!
I thoroughly teaching Hypnobabies classes and sharing such a special time with so many families. It is so gratifying to hear my Hypnobabies “graduates” tell me how much Hypnobabies helped them prepare for and enjoy their babies births (and when they bring their babies over to show off their “diploma”, I absolutely love it!). Do all of my students have a picture-perfect birth? Nope. But what I love is that no matter what their birthing time brings, Hypnobabies prepares families with the information to make good, informed decisions and the tools to have the best possible birth in every scenario.
And I Accidentally Became a Doula, Too!
Okay, so it wasn’t really an accident–more like a hazard of being a Hypnobabies instructor! After I began teaching Hypnobabies, my students started asking me to attend their births as a doula. Honestly, it wasn’t something I was planning on doing–life felt busy enough just keeping up with my classes, my family and everyday life! But it was such an honor to be asked to be present for such a momentous occasion, so I decided I just couldn’t say no. Now I’m hooked, and I can’t get enough!
As a Hypnobabies Certified Hypno-doula (HCHD), I felt confident in my knowledge and abilities to support my Hypnobabies students during their births, but I decided I would feel be able to provide better support to moms who choose a different childbirth preparation course if I had additional doula training as well. I completed my doula training through Childbirth International, and I’m proud to say that I am a Certified Labor Doula.
Being a birth worker presents unique opportunities and challenges, but I absolutely love what I do. Every once in awhile I think maybe I’ve had enough and I should call it quits (hey, I’m human–we all have “those days” at work, right?), but then one of my Hypnobabies “graduates” brings over a new baby, I get a question from a friend about something birth-related (you have no idea how many “secrets” I have to keep when people tell me they’re pregnant before they tell anyone else), or I get an e-mail from someone inquiring about doula support, and I know I’m in it for the long haul. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. I seriously have the best job ever!
A Little Bit About Me
I’ve lived all over the country, but my family and I now call Las Vegas home. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in psychology with a minor in Spanish (I lived in Venezuela for a year and a half). I’m married to my fantastic husband, Benjamin, and we have 4 amazing children. (Kiddo #4 is missing in the photo above…we’ll update our family photos someday!)
In my free time (although I’m not sure that really exists) I enjoy reading, exercising, doing crafts and projects around the house, watching movies with my husband, and just hanging out with my family.
